Floor Plan Design TUTORIAL

In this design tutorial I’ll show you how I develop and sketch floor plan ideas quickly. From diagram to rough sketch and on to more formalized plan layouts, you can follow along as I show you everything you need to draw a floor plan using one of our new residential projects as an example.
I discuss in detail:
– why you should start with diagrams (and not floor plans)
– information you’ll need before drawing
– tools I use and recommend
– tips for developing better ideas
– form, space, and order (of course)
– using grids
– scale
– and what I listen to when designing…

  2. the third time I'm watching this video! great work and really helpful. greetings from Nigeria 😀

  3. That part(3:03) thou haha..m/ i too use the same technic.

  4. Really like the creative sketching process keeping things flexible and adaptable to explore relationships, shapes and sizes whilst being mindful of the site.  Getting in the zone before starting by filling the mind full of higher thinking is brilliant and will definitely use.  I've got Involved in starting the Superhome Movement (encouraging Kiwis to build better homes) in Wanaka near Queenstown in New Zealand and we recently ran a talk on Concept Design.  Referred to your channel in the talk, I find your videos very inspiring, so much so I've taken up the study of Architecture.

    Awesome work 👍

  6. Add Metal = BRILLIANT

I have a question….when you use the sketch book and when you use the trase paper ??????

  8. Thank you. You're such an inspiration. I almost quit

  9. Please don't stop upload videos.

  10. How about discussing the ventilation of a building

  11. Okay, that works fine on rectangular floor plans. But what about abstract floor plans, diagonal or curved walls, amorphous spaces? Can you explain what is the correct method to design them?

  12. And how can i get an autocad lt

Hello, I am a practicing Architect. Your Videos are amazing and inspiring. Sketch is a basic part of overall process for me, love to sketch details during or working drawing phase. My favorite pen is Sign pen followed by micron and first couple of sketches are pencil and mostly not sharp or uneven tip. The idea behind the uneven tip of pencil is that it allow to pay attention to each part of line and sometimes you might wanna play with even and uneven thickness. Thanks again for these wonderful videos.

  15. I love your videos. They add a certain unique creativity to the process which can be quite rigid and forced. I like using pretty much the same pens you use. I use the fine tip Sharpie earlier than you to keep my work sketch like and uncommitted. This allows me to not feel locked in. I generally bring on the larger tip pens like the Pentel medium or bold when I am trying to develop relationships. I generally don't mix red in the early stages. I try to use other colors like green and blue. I generally get back to red when I am trying to analyze my work and make revisions. Then other colors work their way back in such as green and blue…Thanks again, and take care.//Chuck

  16. Hi! Please beginner in architecture life, please do you have an ebook for beginners? need orientation, thanks!

  17. Staedler pigment liner is my go to pen

  18. Hi Eric.
I'm not an architect. I'm a nurse on disability. I am designing a tiny house on wheels for myself. I'm so happy that I stumbled upon your videos. Thank you for the pointers. I'll definitely be watching the rest of your videos!
    Metallica. The Black album.

  19. Your videos inspire me…and make me love the architecture more…:)

  20. I just want you to know, your page is amazing. I downloaded all your videos to my tablet and I sit in my office and watch all day long once I have nothing to do. I am a practicing engineer but I've never been good at architectural drawings or engineering drawings. I was better at soil and geotechnical works.

  21. Is there a video to enhance my rendering skills on paper??

  22. Another great video, don't have pens… [or paper] –

I flip between /SketchUp and Sketchbook on my Galaxy Note 12.2

via screen captures but in a methodology similar to yours…

  23. Sharpie fine tip…black and red, sign pen black and a pencil 9B…for peripheral sketches. ..
Lots of trace paper and blue, yellow and pink highlighters the deeper I get into the design sketches b4 transforming it to CAD for accuracy..but sketching never stops…even on CAD…I print out and sketch over again and again. I find it easier to communicate this way, and translate my language into the project…

  24. Sir, You make awesome videos 😃

  25. New subject for a video: difference between architect and interior designer

  26. Hi
could you please make a video about Urban Design for a housing projects and how can we separate between vehicles and pedestrians movement

  27. i used uni pins and staedtler pens sir 🙂

  28. Can you answer these questions?
    – 1. How presentation works? ( cuz i never did one )
    – 2. What are the things you studyed in math / geomtry i mean can you speciefy them all?
XD its because i want to REstudy them cuz im not good in this subject but i want to learn it again so when i go to architect school i wouldnt have any problems with math and geometry If u cant then can you tell a name of a book that explain math and geometry VERY well ?

    Thanks .. 🙂

  29. Can you make a video about drawing a master plan?

  30. why are all convenient floor plans rectangular?..Is it the trend or some functional or aesthetic phenomena behind it?

  31. Creat Video. Very useful 😀

  32. TOOL for sure🤘

  33. As an architecture student, I reach times where I feel so stressed and tired of architecture, so I watch your videos to motivate myself and to get back to work. Thank you

  34. thank you very much Mr. Reinholdt. as an architcture graduate i was losing my way in the field. but your videos and some other sources of inspiration and incentives are helping me out. keep making this valuable stuff. i am so happy for this connection 🙂

  35. Thanks 😀

  36. Hey Eric, really loved the video and lots of good information as always. Big fan of the trace technique, especially in an age where it seems everyone is designing straight on the computer!

  37. I really don't know if i am from another generation of architects or I'm wrong about the development of a floor plane, but I go right from computer to build my model. Maybe there's no way right or wrong, maybe it's just the way you manage your own project.

  38. Hi sir. It is my last year at school and next year I will need to attend university. So I just want to know what subjects are needed to do architecture courses? The subjects that I have studied are maths, arts and accounting. Please let me know what I need to do,will I be able to able to attain my goal. Thanks in advance. Also, I really like your channel. It is very helpful.☺

  42. Mauro De los Santos

Maybe is a good idea to make one about recommended websites to search articles or learn things (like archmore on youtube) or one about how to draw details! right now i'm on a mess doing a wall detail with all the layers and stuff, maybe you can clarify the general ideas or some tricks. Sorrry about my english, cheers from Uruguay!

  43. dude your videos are amazing. I'm n architect like you. I just wonder if you had a choice between architecture and film making a a course what do you choose?

  44. Hey Eric, great video as usually expected, could u please do a video explaining how to well integrate a project on a slope and how could an architect make a good reflection on the landscape, please ?
